Research Before You Buy: Six Ways to Evaluate Products

Purchasing the right products that support your business is the backbone for providing top-notch services—an extension of your ability. From software and linens to equipment and consumables, putting in the time to research and evaluate product quality before buying is reassuring and satisfying. Knowing that you have done your due diligence when selecting your purchased items can thwart buyer's remorse and reaffirm that you have made the right choices for your business. Here are six tasks I use to help make informed decisions:

1. Read the Description Thoroughly

Always read the product description! This is your first glimpse into what the product offers. Pay close attention to the specifications, features, and intended use. Be certain the product aligns with your expectations of use and service offerings.

2. Check for Certifications

Certifications are quality and safety indicators. Look for certifications relevant to the product type, such as UL certification for electronics or FDA approval for medical devices. These certifications can provide peace of mind about the product’s reliability.

3. Reviews and Ratings

Online reviews and ratings can offer valuable insights into a product’s performance and potential issues. Look for patterns in the feedback—for example, consistent complaints might signal a common problem and should be avoided. Focus on detailed, balanced feedback to avoid fake reviews. I find emotionally charged reviews do not provide valuable insight into the product’s capability and reveal more about the reviewer's lack of understanding of the product's intended use. So keep an open mind when reading reviews.

4. Brand Reputation

A popular brand with a good reputation for quality is more likely to produce high-quality products. They may have a larger customer base, and you could benefit from word-of-mouth marketing in customer reviews. If you trust the brand and have had positive experiences with its products, put it on your list to consider.

5. Price Comparison

Never equate higher prices with better quality. Compare prices across different brands and product models. Compare the details among the various items. How do they compare to your needs, budget, and expectations? Aim to find a product that offers the best value, balancing cost and quality to support your services effectively.

6. Product’s Lifespan and Durability

Look into the expected lifespan and durability of the product. Consider how often you will use the product. For equipment, ask yourself if those items will remain stationary or be used in a way that requires moving them from one location to another.

Choose equipment that is made of high-quality materials
and built to endure your environment and use. Investing in high-quality, durable equipment may have a higher initial cost but can save money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements or repairs. This is a moment where you should go back and look at product reviews to help determine the right product for you and avoid making a purchase you will regret later.

Conclusion

Always do your research before making a purchase. By reading product descriptions, checking for certifications, reviewing ratings, and following through on each recommendation provided, you will make well-informed purchasing decisions. Take the time to thoroughly research before buying, and you'll enhance your confidence in your choices and the overall quality of your business operations.
